Our Lil Dominican Readers deserve to see themselves represented in the books they read. Our book box aims to help spread the beauty of our culture through rich characters and stories written by Dominican authors.
Somos mas de 15 millones dominicanos!
Dominican Writers Association and OneKIN have partnered to share rich stories and diverse voices of Dominican-American authors from across the world.

Representation in children’s books is especially important for our Lil Dominican Readers to develop a positive sense of self and identity.
When children see characters that reflect their own experiences, cultures, and backgrounds, they can feel seen, valued, and affirmed.

We're seeking your support to help us build a brand-new subscription book box for young Dominican readers.
Why is literacy important?
Representation
Providing children with access to reading materials in which they can both see themselves and experience the lives of others benefits the individual readers.

Empowerment
Reading books that represent a range of perspectives promotes a child’s achievement and enhances wellbeing.

Education
Books can provide challenging topics creating bridges for difficult conversation with parents and other trusted adults and help children critically navigate the world.

Inspiration
Representation in literature can motivate readers to follow their aspirations and overcome hurdles.

Authenticity
Books that engage readers with relevant and authentic stories encourage deeper and more prolific reading which, in turn, improve a child’s academic achievement, well-being, and future opportunities.
The invisible mental load of bilingual parenting/education was meant to be shared. We weren’t meant to do this without discussing how we are really feeling, what’s working and what’s not, what’s challenging and what’s easy, what we feel proud of and what we feel judged for.

Empowered by Reading
Providing your Lil Dominican Readers with diverse reading about our Dominican culture allows them to relate to characters and explore different perspectives can have both individual and communal benefits.

Books that have authentic and relevant stories can lead to deeper and more frequent reading. This can have positive effects on students' academic achievement, well-being, and future opportunities.

Books that cover controversial and challenging topics can help children have difficult conversations and navigate their world in a critical manner. They can serve as a bridge to foster such conversations.

They REALLY do go with everything!
I love the connection the author made between plátanos and the Dominican Republic. This story is a wonderful example of how cultural traditions get passed down via the subtle art of different ways to prepare plátanos.

“I didn’t read books by Dominican authors until I was in my 20s, and it’s a shame because I feel that if I had read books with characters I could identify with, I would have felt affirmed and validated in this world. With Lil’ Dominican Readers we hope to create a similar impact in the lives of your child. May this collection of books inspire them to continue reading our stories."
